The most exciting announcement we’ve been waiting for! Meet little Shiloh and Sion, twin boys born to Stella this afternoon! Shiloh means peaceful, tranquil and He who is and Sion means God is gracious. I’m grateful to be able to tell them apart, Shiloh has the white slash on his belly and Sion has the kiss of Merlin marking on his chest and white tipped tail. These little guys came into the world so quickly, both on the ground within 30 minutes. Stella kept me guessing the last couple days and I wasn’t sure it was going to happen today, but when she was ready to go, she went and barely labored and pushed. She had the placenta fully out within an hour of active labor. Stella is a pro as this is her second kidding! We are so thankful the Lord heard all of our collective prayers and after several traumatic kiddings, gifted us such a wonderful kidding experience and during the day to boot. Boys and momma are doing well and both have figured out their sea legs and where the milk comes from. So looking forward to adding them to our Jump for JOY Program this year. Bittersweet sap season this year. Wasn’t a good one unfortunately. Pulled the last of the lines and taps today. Been cleaning lines, taps and buckets and packing everything away until next year. Farm life is beholden to the weather. We move on and push forward to what’s next, spring planting season!

This fun family came all the way from Detroit during their spring break to take my Pygmy Goat Class and tour this weekend. We had a lovely time despite it being mud season. It was a joy to meet them and share goat education to help prepare them in their goat ownership journey. I’ve been receiving several requests lately for this class from all over the state I am hoping to offer a special training weekend this summer or fall open to 10 families to come for an extra special weekend of learning and extra bonuses. More details on that coming soon.

Finally a good run! So nice out. Family came over to see the collection process and how we take the sap to be processed. 175 gallons today, fingers crossed for a great sap week. Off to do hoof trimmings and annual vaccinations for the goaties ☀️🐐👩‍🌾

Ohhh the woes of sap season. This has been the most oddball year out of the 3 I’ve been collecting. We are way down in numbers but hoping to get at least 3/4 of the amount of sap we collected the previous two years. Today we dropped off a modest 138 gallons. My first year was definitely the best in terms of volume per trees and taps. Last year was not great either and this year is to be determined. The risk and reward of a life of full time farming.

An incredibly productive weekend! The goat housing got deep cleaned and power washed today. Stella Bella got moved into her own maternity pen to finish out her pregnancy. Also stocked up on straw and other animal feed supplies. 👏👏👏

It’s finally time! The sap season has had a late start this year. This week looks golden. Mom Joy and I knocked it out today hustling through the dark until 9pm to get all the maple and walnut trees tapped and lines ran. We are ready for the run starting tomorrow!

When I restarted my herd in 2021, I didn’t have intentional plans of breeding. That latter notion was short lived, however.

I thought I needed to do x, y and z. Go to shows, grow my herd as much as I could and fit into some kind of box.

Unfortunately, because of circumstances beyond my control, heartbreaking ones… the latter hasn’t been an easy feat.

Because I’m one of a handful of breeders in Michigan, I get requests regularly from people looking to purchase pygmy goats.

I have shifted my desires to fit my reality based on the hand I’ve been dealt. Losing 5 does in my breeding program in a year, sucked.

My last doe I had to breed wouldn’t get pregnant but miraculously did and I had my first non c-section delivery in 2024.

I recently purchased a new doe with high hopes of breeding, but again it seems my hopes for that have been dashed as she can’t conceive.

I am in process of having her tested to confirm a diagnosis. All this to say, I’m pretty proud of these two certificates that arrived today.

Despite all the kidding complications over the last few years, I’ve still managed to have 4 kiddings and only lose 1 baby.

I’m so thankful the c section mommas all survived and that we’ve had 4 healthy babies with a 5th kidding planned for this April.

Today, I’m choosing to celebrate the small victories and these two certificates that bear the Parkside Farm name.

I may not travel out of state for shows with my goats but I travel with them for a living with my Jump for JOY Program®.

I may not be able to sell animals (because I have none to sell) but I have trained families who are interested in goat ownership.

In a round about way, hopefully these setbacks will help setup others to successfully own and care for their own goats.

Just a friendly reminder that you don’t have to fit into a box and do what everyone does. You can pivot, innovate and adapt.

I hope when people look at my life they can say I’ve made the most out of the lemons I didn’t foresee being given.

My prayer is my experience inspires you to alter your priorities if you need to. Mourn the losses, but don’t let them stop you.
