An incredibly productive weekend! The goat housing got deep cleaned and power washed today. Stella Bella got moved into her own maternity pen to finish out her pregnancy. Also stocked up on straw and other animal feed supplies. 👏👏👏

It’s finally time! The sap season has had a late start this year. This week looks golden. Mom Joy and I knocked it out today hustling through the dark until 9pm to get all the maple and walnut trees tapped and lines ran. We are ready for the run starting tomorrow!

When I restarted my herd in 2021, I didn’t have intentional plans of breeding. That latter notion was short lived, however.

I thought I needed to do x, y and z. Go to shows, grow my herd as much as I could and fit into some kind of box.

Unfortunately, because of circumstances beyond my control, heartbreaking ones… the latter hasn’t been an easy feat.

Because I’m one of a handful of breeders in Michigan, I get requests regularly from people looking to purchase pygmy goats.

I have shifted my desires to fit my reality based on the hand I’ve been dealt. Losing 5 does in my breeding program in a year, sucked.

My last doe I had to breed wouldn’t get pregnant but miraculously did and I had my first non c-section delivery in 2024.

I recently purchased a new doe with high hopes of breeding, but again it seems my hopes for that have been dashed as she can’t conceive.

I am in process of having her tested to confirm a diagnosis. All this to say, I’m pretty proud of these two certificates that arrived today.

Despite all the kidding complications over the last few years, I’ve still managed to have 4 kiddings and only lose 1 baby.

I’m so thankful the c section mommas all survived and that we’ve had 4 healthy babies with a 5th kidding planned for this April.

Today, I’m choosing to celebrate the small victories and these two certificates that bear the Parkside Farm name.

I may not travel out of state for shows with my goats but I travel with them for a living with my Jump for JOY Program®.

I may not be able to sell animals (because I have none to sell) but I have trained families who are interested in goat ownership.

In a round about way, hopefully these setbacks will help setup others to successfully own and care for their own goats.

Just a friendly reminder that you don’t have to fit into a box and do what everyone does. You can pivot, innovate and adapt.

I hope when people look at my life they can say I’ve made the most out of the lemons I didn’t foresee being given.

My prayer is my experience inspires you to alter your priorities if you need to. Mourn the losses, but don’t let them stop you.

Such an amazing, interactive farm display, bees and apple exhibit (even got to taste test some yummy apple sauce!) What a whirlwind of a week! ✈️🌎🌵
After the political academy kicked off last week, I headed to San Antonio, TX for the annual @farmbureau conference.

It was an amazing opportunity for networking, learning, growth and education, complete with an incredible trade show, featuring Texas longhorns.

The workshops I focused on encompassed:
- Women in Farm Bureau leadership
- Farm Bill, legislative and court updates
- Networking luncheons and more

Some incredible highlights included:
- Seeing therapy dogs at the GR airport (the first animal therapy program I was involved in)
- Being recognized by the therapy dog handler as a local poultry judge
- The San Antonio zoo to see baby Tupi the capybara that’s gone viral
- Meeting amazing ag influencers @barnardbeef and @bar7ranch
- Exploring the Riverwalk, restaurants and The Alamo - so much history
- Hearing keynotes from @ltcoldanrooney and Eric Boles, wow! Such inspirational speakers
- Reconnecting with Jennifer and Zippy Duvall
- Networking with Michigan members, board members and staff

There’s so much more I could say, but for now I will say, thank you Kent County Farm Bureau for this incredible opportunity to attend. I can’t say enough good things about Farm Bureau.

In all my years of working, volunteering and entrepreneurship, I’ve never been better treated, cared for, represented and valued by an organization.

Being a part of this organization as a board member and farm member has truly been a godsend and dream come true and exceeded any and all expectations.

Another then and now! Meet Hadley our 7lb imperial shih tzu. She rules the roost, thinks she’s a herding dog and often forgets she’s not a cat. She likes the goats but they don’t like her so she keeps her distance. She frequently likes to annoy the house rabbits and suffers from FOMO (fear of missing out) and idiopathic epilepsy. She will be 8 this spring and she’s just starting to slow down. She’s a ball of energy and loves to be next to me at all times, though she often saves her worst behavior for me. She’s who always greets me first when I get home and the last one to say goodnight when she cuddles up next to me. She’s one of a kind and loves living farm life.
